Al Pacino in Heat

Lt. Det. Vincent Hanna

Vincent Hanna is a police lieutenant detective in the L.A.P.D. Robbery-Homicide Division and one of the two main protagonists in the 1995 film Heat. He is portrayed in the film by Al Pacino.

Character Summary[]

Hanna was the one who lead the investigation of the ex-con Neil McCauley and his crew's heists. Hanna was partnered with reliable police unit partners Sammy Casals, Drucker, Mike Bosko, and Danny Schwartz. He had previously had a nicotine problem so as a result he now chewed gum. Hanna had previously made a successful name for himself up in Chicago by taking down major criminals there.

Hanna's main issue is that he has no one to go back to at the end of the day who loves him. His wife Justine has committed adultery with her friend Ralph and this doesn't help matters given that Hanna is obsessed with his job and this is his third marriage. Complicating matters are the fact that his daughter Lauren Gustafson has just attempted suicide and that his has no realm of happiness outside of his job doing what he does well.

Background Information and Notes[]

  • Much like McCauley, Hanna is also mentioned as being a former Marine.
  • It was filmmaker Michael Mann's full intention to make both Hanna and McCauley essentially the same people but on different sides of the law. While there are some differences, the overall outcomes are the same: Hanna for instance when shooting and killing McCauley feels nothing of accomplishment at the end of the day and has just thrown away his third marriage after fighting with his estranged spouse; McCauley on the other hand has successfully taken part in his final robbery but lost everything he loved- his girlfriend, Eady, had to be abandoned by him due to the police following him and lost his other friends (Chris Shiherlis, Michael Cheritto, Trejo) to fleeing the state, killed during the final robbery and by traitor Waingro respectively.
