DHS- rookie officer Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) in Training Day

Jake Hoyt

Jake Hoyt was a rookie police officer and the assigned partner of Alonzo Harris in 2001's Training Day. He was portrayed by actor Ethan Hawke in the film.

Character Summary[]

Hoyt has originally been assigned to his training officer Debbie Maxwell and the most action he had seen prior had been at a D.U.I. stop where he helped Officer Maxwell obtain 500 grams of meth in a criminal's dashboard. As a result of this arrest, Hoyt and Maxwell stopped this criminal, who was out on bail for distribution, from murdering his ex-partner prior to his respective trial.

Jake was in a happy marriage with his spouse, Lisa, and was later transferred to be evaluated by decorated yet unknowingly corrupt LAPD officer Alonzo Harris during a 24-hour period. During that entire day, Jake ended up getting drugged, witnessing various illegal procedures including police brutality, harassment and the arranged murder of ex-con Roger and survived being interrogated by Sureño gang leader "Smiley". At the end of the day, Jake, with some minor assistance, helped root out Alonzo from the neighborhoods he had corrupted and ended up being able to walk away with his life at the end of the day.

Background Information and Notes[]

  • Due to both this 2001 film and the 2005 remake of Assault on Precinct 13 having similar modern-day styles on police corruption as well as both being co-produced by Jeffrey Silver and starring Ethan Hawke, many critics and audiences have noted that they believe that Training Day 's Jake Hoyt might also be the same character as Jake Roenick in the 2005 remake.
